Evento de beneficencia para la Biblioteca

Nuestros amigos y amigas de Mayan Education Foundation lograron realizar un evento para recolectar fondos para la Biblioteca Comunitaria. El evento se llevó a cabo en Estados Unidos y luego nos enviaron el dinero mucho tiempo después pues la realidad de la biblioteca no se concretó hasta dos años después porque siendo un proyecto de desarrollo se creó la biblioteca desde la Comunidad y también nos demoramos en encontrar un local para funcionar.

Our friends from the Maya Educational Foundation English Language Program organized a fundraising event in the United States for the Library. They raised funds which provided seed money to help start the library.

Historia de la Biblioteca
Una lluviosa tarde el 30 de junio del año 2007 más de 80 padres y madres de familia firmaron una solicitud al entonces alcalde Municipal (José María López) para que prestara un local dónde pudiera funcionar una biblioteca comunitaria.

La reunión con los padres y madres de familia se llevó a cabo en la Escuela Rural Mixta de Tzununá.

La profesora Billie Batz, entonces Directora de la Escuela Rural Mixta de Tzununá, brindó un apoyo fundamental a la Biblioteca. Sin su entusiasmo el comienzo de este proyecto no hubiera sido posible.

Billie Batz y Maria Castells fueron a reunirse con José María López, entonces Alcalde Municipal quien da un local. El local fue entregado pero la ayuda de los libros no llegó a tiempo para instalar la Biblioteca antes del cambio de autoridades.

On a rainy day, June 30, 2007 Billy Batz and Maria Castells held a meeting with parents of the local elementary school. Billy Batz explained in kaqchikel (the local mayan language) the idea of the library: the need for community support and a place to begin to put the books. People were very enthusiastic and asked a lot of questions.

In the end we got more then 80 signatures for a request that the Mayor provide a place for a community library in town buildings. The support of the Teacher Billie Batz was very important. Without her enthusiam this proyect would not have been possible.

Thank you Billie Batz for beleiving in the Comunity Library!


A meeting was held with Mayor José María López and he gave us a place to start. But with new elections the administration changed and we had to wait.
